What You Should Know about Breastfeeding

Our pediatricians can help make breastfeeding an easier experience for both you and your baby.

Your little bundle of joy is about to arrive soon and yet you still have questions and things to plan. Along with mapping out your birth plan, you may also be wondering whether or not to breastfeed. This is a very personal choice, here at Children's Healthcare Associates in Chicago, IL, our pediatricians understand that while breastfeeding is natural and beautiful, it isn’t always as easy as it should be.

Here’s what you should know about breastfeeding:

“Latching” takes time

While some moms experience latching immediately and don’t have trouble breastfeeding, the truth is that for most mothers, the “latch” takes practice.

It’s important to find a comfortable position for you before breastfeeding and to guide your baby to the nipple. How do you know your baby has latched? You’ll notice the characteristic “suck-swallow-breathe” pattern.

You may feel like you’re nursing around the clock

A newborn will nurse every 2-3 hours for the first two months. After two months, babies will nurse about every 3-4 hours until they are 6 months old, at which time solid foods can start to be incorporated into their diets. It’s important to understand that these nursing sessions take time. In fact, some feedings can take up to 45 minutes.

You may notice that you’re hungry

… All of the time. That’s because breastfeeding burns anywhere from 300-500 calories a day. Therefore, it’s very important to stay hydrated and well-fed. Eating a healthy, balanced diet is critical to ensuring that your baby gets all the nutrients they need; however, you don’t have to avoid the foods you avoided when you were pregnant so don’t forget that it’s okay to pamper yourself with a sushi night or a savory cheese board.
